High Speed Headaches
High speed internet has finally made its way to my little town. Qwest owns the lines and for unknown reasons has not expanded or updated their equipment to allow us high speed. Any high speed offer out there - I sign up for and get a "not available in your area" message. However, for the month of July three or four households are in the "test phase" for a high speed provider serving a few other nearby towns - apparently with lots 'o satisfied customers. The technician came and hooked it up July 1. The first five days were GREAT!! Forget that dial up business - gone were the days of slowwwwww....
Then things started to go bad. At first it was four or five hours of fine fast internet, then I would lose my connection. The first two times that happened I didn't realize that all I had to do was connect my phone jack back into the tower and use dial up. My extremely brilliant dad pointed this out to me later (obviously I didn't inherit his genius). Thus I called and left a somewhat terse message at about 3:00 a.m. the second time on the tech guy's cell phone. I said I had to have internet and if nothing else - to PLEASE just call me back!! He never did.
My internet connection time seemed to get shorter and shorter every day with the "high speed" service. When it works it's great but I need something reliable. We are nearing the end of the "test" period and I suspect will be billed as of the first of August if I don't cancel it. It has been a bit more reliable the past couple days after some maintenance on Wednesday. Still.. I'm not prepared to surrender my old faithful dial up - so what if I can bake a cake in the time it takes to open up Yahoo? Change is a scary word. Next thing you know they'll be installing indoor plumbing.
